Description
Dental implant. Light micrograph of a cross- section through a titanium metal dental implant (multicoloured) in a jawbone (purple). Implants are used to support false teeth (dental prosthes- es) where teeth have died and been removed. This is the lower part of the implant's base, or post, which has been surgically embedded into a hole drilled in the jawbone. The outer part of the post is fluffed up", so that new bone will grow into the titanium to provide a strong base for the false tooth. An attachment will then be screwed onto this post. Finally the false tooth will be cemented onto this attachment. Interference contrast. Magnification: x50 at 6x4.5cm size."
