Artist's Description

Linotype operators working for the Chicago Defender newspaper. The linotype was the first fully-automated typesetting machine. It was called the linotype because it cast an entire line of type at one time. It was the dominant method in newspaper printing until the 1960s. Photograph taken in April 1941.
