Description
Lactating breast tissue. Light micrograph of a section through lactating human mammary gland. Visible is a field of circular alveoli. Each alveolus consists of a layer of epithelial cells with purple nuclei, enclosing a central space. The epithelial cells are actively secreting components of milk comprising droplets of fat and cytoplasmic debris including protein. Secretory products (pink) can be seen in the central cavities of the alveoli. These secretions drain into larger ducts, which reach the nipple. Lactation (milk production) is a complex process triggered by hormones. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
