Artist's Description

Human retina. Light micrograph of the retina of the human eye. The retina, which detects visible images, is made up of many layers of cells (seen here). The dark layer at top is a layer of pigmented cells beneath which lie the rods and cones. Rod cells and cone cells are specialized light sensitive cells (photoreceptors). Rods detect light intensity & cones (flame-shaped cells with pale nuclei) detect colour. The layer of darker bodies below the cone cells contains many rod cell nuclei. At the bottom are the cell bodies of the nerve cells which carry impulses from the photoreceptor cells to the optic nerve and the brain. Magnification: x2000 at 35mm size.
