Description
Libyan Desert outcrop, satellite image. North is at top. Sand dunes are white, less sandy areas are blue, and rock is dark grey. This rock outcrop (centre) is in the Libyan Desert in the Eastern Sahara, and is close to the Libya-Egypt-Chad border. The swathes of sand (white) are massive sand dunes circling the outcrop. This is a particularly arid area of the Sahara. The area shown in this image is around 60 kilometres wide. The image data includes infrared wavelengths, and was obtained on 2 March 2002, using the ASTER sensor on the Terra satellite.
