Lewy body disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a coronal (vertical) section through a brain with Lewy body disease. The brain (pale & mid grey) has atrophied, resulting in the two enlarged fluid-filled ventricles (dark, centre), and holes (dark) near the hippocampi (lower left & right). Microscopically, abnormal lumps called Lewy bodies develop inside nerve cells in the cortex and brainstem. Symptoms, which overlap with both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, also include hallucinations and wild fluctuations in the condition's severity from day-to-day. There is no cure from the gradual decline and death.
