False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Leptospira interrogans, featuring two of the tightly-coiled, highly motile spirochaete bacteria. Pathogenic serotypes cause leptospirosis in man, an infectious disease characterized by fever, vomiting, conjunctivitis and muscular pains. Jaundice and renal failure may occur in the severe form of infection known as Weil's disease. Rodents are the main carriers, also dogs and farm animals farmers, sewage workers and vets. are susceptible to infection. Penicillin is the antibiotic of choice for treatment. Magnification X 15,000 at 35mm size.
