Description
Lentil plant stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a lentil (Lens culinaris) plant. Here, the epidermis (green, outer layer) is disintegrating. Under this the cortex has produced a phellogen (cork cambium) and six files of phellem (cork, brown). Underneath where the epidermis has ruptured (layers of brown and green) is a loose layer of cork (complementary tissue). The cortex is made up of parenchyma cells (yellow) but there is a ring of sclereids (thickened sclerenchyma cells, red) for support. Outside the vascular ring are patches of phloem fibres (green). Magnification: x37 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
