Space Shuttle Columbia, embarking on the first orbital flight of the Shuttle (mission STS-1), takes off from the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, on April 12th 1981. Two days later the Shuttle, piloted by veteran astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen, returned to Earth at Edwards Airforce Base, California.
