Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, satellite image. North is at top. Urban areas and vegetation are green, water is black and barren ground is brown/purple. Las Vegas (centre left) is the largest city in the state of Nevada, the metropolitan area having a population of over 1.8 million (2006). To the east of the city is Lake Mead, a man-made lake and reservoir formed by the damming of the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam. The dam itself is on the southern edge of the western part of the lake, and its hydroelectric power plant generates over 2000 megawatts of power. This image was taken in visible and infrared light by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) instrument on board the Landsat 7 satellite.
