Las Vegas. Coloured optical and infrared, Landsat satellite image of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. North is at top. The desert surrounding the city is brown, with patches of colour (yellow and red) indicating mineral deposits and mining areas (pale blue). Water is black, as in Lake Mead (far right). The city itself is a patchwork of blue buildings and green vegetation, with a clearly visible grid of roads. The dense dark blue patch at centre left is The Strip, an avenue of hotels and casinos. The runways (white) of McCarran International Airport form a V-shape at lower right of The Strip.
