Description
Laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) running on a plastic wheel. Mice are commonly used for genetic manipulations, safety tests on chemicals and drugs and for the study of infectious organisms. They are used as experimental animals because they produce large litters of young several times a year. Their size and genetic similarity to humans is also ideal for medical and toxicity tests. However, the suffering caused to animal research subjects by such experimentation remains controversial.
