Description
Kiwi fruit petiole. Light micrograph of a section through a petiole of a kiwi fruit (Actinidia sinensis) plant. The petiole is the stalk of a leaf. The epidermis (violet) is covered in hairs (trichomes). Underneath the epidermis is a layer of collenchyma cells (red). Next is a thin layer of parenchyma cortex (blue). Next a ring of vascular bundles. Then sclerenchyma (black-blue), phloem (blue) with sieve tubes and plates, and xylem (blue). Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
