Description
Killer whale. View of a male killer whale (Orcinus orca) rising from the sea showing his large dorsal fin. Killer whales, or orcas, are large predatory dolphins which inhabit seas throughout the world, except for the extreme polar regions. Killer whales may reach lengths of over 9 metres, although the females are usually smaller. The males' dorsal fins may be almost two metres tall. They live in groups of between two and 40 individuals, and chase and eat almost anything, including seals, penguins, fish, whales and other dolphins. They can swim at speeds approaching 60 kilometres per hour. They rarely, if ever, attack humans, and have no natural predators.
