Description
Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) at dusk. This endangered deer is only found in the Florida Keys, USA and is a sub-species of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). It inhabits grassland, freshwater wetland and mangrove swamps. It feeds in the evening mainly on mangrove plants (Rhizophora sp.) and thatch palm berries (Sabal sp.) as well as other vegetation. Poaching and habitat destruction are the main causes for the decline of this deer. Photographed in Big Pine Key, Florida, USA.
