Artist's Description
Route map of the Jungfrau Railway (Jungfraubahn), situated between the Bernese Highlands and the Valais in Switzerland. This map dates from 1912, the year the railway came into operation and shows the route of this mountain rack railway climbing 1, 400m from Kleine Scheidegg (2, 064 metres ?above? sea-level), to the highest railway station in Europe at Jungfraujoch, (3, 454 metres). The Strub system track has a gauge of one metre and the twin-unit motorcoaches are electrically powered via an overhead line. There are 5 stations in total and the overall length is 9.34 km, of which 80%, over 7km, runs within the Jungfrau Tunnel through the triple peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. An elevator runs from the Jungfraujoch station to the summit where the Sphinx Astronomical Observatory is located.
