Description
Julius Aloysius (Arthur) Nieuwland (1878-1936), Belgian-born US chemist. Nieuwland emigrated with his parents to the USA in 1880. He was ordained a priest in the Congregation of the Holy Cross in 1903. He studied at the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1904 and obtaining his doctorate in 1911 from the Catholic University of America. At Notre Dame, he was professor of botany and then organic chemistry, studying acetylene. His awards include the Morehead Medal (1932), the American Institute Medal (1934), the Nichols Medal (1935), and the Mendel Medal (1936). Photograph by the Harris and Ewing photographic studio.
