Artist's Description
Joseph Ivor Silk (born 1942), British-US cosmologist. Silk worked at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, for three decades. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1999), he was Savilian Professor of Astronomy at the University of Oxford from 1999 to 2012. He has lectured widely on galaxy formation and cosmology, and was awarded the Balzan Prize (2011). The phenomenon of diffusion damping in the cosmic microwave background is known as Silk damping. Silk's publications include 'The Infinite Cosmos' (2006) and 'On the Shores of the Unknown: A Short History of the Universe' (2005). Photographed in 2007, in the Department of Physics, Oxford, UK.
