Artist's Description

Jokichi Takamine (1854-1922), Japanese chemist. Takamine graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University in 1879. From 1883 to 1887, he worked as a chemist at the Japanese government's Department of Agriculture and Commerce. He then founded the Tokyo Artificial Fertilizer Company where he isolated a starch-digesting enzyme that was named takadiastase after him. He later emigrated to the USA and made his fortune through licensing the rights to this enzyme. At his research laboratory in New York City, he worked on the hormone adrenaline. Photograph by Alman and Company photographic studio, New York, USA.
