Description
John Lindley (1799-1865), British botanist, gardener and orchidologist. Lindley's career began with him working for British naturalist Sir Joseph Banks, drawing and describing plants. In 1820, Lindley was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society of London. From 1822, he was assistant secretary of the Horticultural Society of London (later the Royal Horticultural Society). In addition to this, he worked as a professor of botany at University College, London, from 1829, holding both positions until 1860. He had been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1828. His honours included an honorary doctorate from Munich (1833).
