Artist's Description

John Miller Turpin Finney (1863-1942), US surgeon. Finney worked at the John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. He was second in command to William Halsted (1852-1922), one of the four founding physicians of the hospital (opened 1889). Halsted and Finney introduced aseptic techniques and what is called the Halstedian approach to surgery, which emphasised the careful handling of human tissue, control of bleeding and anatomically accurate dissection and suturing of tissue. Photographed circa 1912.
