Jewel beetles. View of the upper side of a number of Madecassia rothschildi jewel beetles (family Buprestidae, showing their iridescent bodies. The bodies of these specimens measure 5cm long. The larger and more spectacularly coloured jewel beetles are highly prized by insect collectors and the wing cases (elytra) of some Buprestidae species have been traditionally used in beetlewing jewellery and decoration in certain Asian countries, including India, Thailand and Japan.
