Description
Japan's coastal sea floor topography. Computer model of ocean floor depth (bathymetry) off the eastern coast of Japan. The peaks are underwater mountains and volcanoes. The tectonic plate boundary is marked by the deep trench running through centre. It was here that a massive offshore earthquake on 11 March 2011 caused a tsunami that devastated the coast around Sendai. The sharp transition in depth increased the impact of this tsunami. This model, using the ETOPO-1 dataset, was produced by the Environmental Visualization Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
