Description
Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), or snow monkey, submerged in the waters of a hot spring. This primate has the northernmost range of any monkey, inhabiting the islands of Japan. In winter, temperatures can fall to minus 5 degrees Celsius and the monkeys warm themselves by bathing in hot springs. They usually live in groups of around 100 individuals. Groups have a strict social hierarchy, being led by adult males. They feed on leaves and ripe fruits, and in the winter may resort to eating buds and even tree bark. Photographed near Nagano, Japan.
