Description
Jaguarundi. View of a jaguarundi (also called a jaguarondi, Felis yagouaroundi) sitting on a forest floor. This cat is native to Central and South America, where it inhabits forests and scrub. It hunts mainly by day, which is unusual for the cat family. It hunts in the lower branches of trees as well as on the ground, but is not an excellent climber. It is, however, an excellent swimmer, often pursuing its prey through water, and earning it the name of the otter cat" in Central America. Its main prey are small mammals, frogs, fish and reptiles. Ancient Central American civilisations such as the Aztecs tamed jaguarundis to control rodents. Photographed in Belize."
