Description
Isidor Straus (1845-1912) and his wife Ida (1849-1912). Isidor was the co-owner of Macy's department store in New York City. The couple were on the Titanic after spending a winter in Europe. The Titanic was the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, and was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. On the night of the sinking Isidor refused to get into a lifeboat while women and children remained on the ship. Ida refused to leave Isidors side and the pair were last seen standing on the deck arm in arm.
