Description
Isaac Newton Telescope. This 2.5-metre optical telescope was constructed in 1967 at Herstmonceux Castle, Sussex, England, the new site of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The observatory had moved from Greenwich to avoid the light pollution of London, but the bad weather at the new site eventually led to this telescope being moved in 1979 to an observatory on La Palma, in the Canary Islands. The telescope mount is seen at lower left, the base of the mirror is at lower centre, and the telescope dome viewing aperture is at upper right.
