Description
Isaac Newton (1642-1727), English physicist, mathematician and alchemist. Newton discovered the binomial theorem and developed differential and integral calculus. He devised laws of motion, formulated the general theory of gravitation and wrote on optics. He invented the reflecting telescope, wrote extensively on alchemy, and tried in vain to discover a 'philosopher's stone' to convert common metals into gold. He wrote extensively on biblical Creation and prophecies. He was knighted in 1705. This engraving, by Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780), shows muses and scientific equipment with a portrait after Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723).
