Artist's Description
Iroquois settlement, illustration. The Iroquois (also known as the Haudenosaunee) are a Native American people found in what is now the north-eastern USA. Traditionally, most of their diet was from farming, though they also fished and hunted animals (such as the deer shown here). The crops they cultivated included corn (maize, Zea mays), seen at left. At right is a stockade fence, protecting their settlement from enemy raids. In the background is part of a traditional Iroquois longhouse (see image C027/0579).
