Description
Ironclad warship CSS Virginia. 19th-century sketch of the CSS Virginia, the first ironclad warship built by the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The ship's 'Stars and Bars' Confederate flag is at upper right. This ship was built on the carcass of the US Navy frigate USS Merrimack (name at upper right) and commissioned in 1862. She engaged with the Union's ironclad vessel USS Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads, Virginia, on 9 March 1862. This first meeting in combat of ironclad warships signalled the end of the era of wooden ships. The CSS Virginia was destroyed in May 1862 to prevent it falling into enemy hands.
