Description
Iron works. These buildings, blast furnaces and railway are part of the Junction Iron Company iron works, Wheeling, West Virginia, USA. Also known as Jefferson iron works and 'Mingo Junction', these works were built in 1871 and rebuilt in 1886. Dating from the 1930s, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
