Irish elk family, illustration. The Irish elk (Megaloceros sp.) was one of the largest deer that ever lived. It ranged across Eurasia from around 400, 000 to 8000 years ago (from the Middle Pleistocene to the Early Holocene). It was over 2 metres high at the shoulder, with the male having large antlers.
