Description
Ireland, true-colour satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is green, barren land is brown and water is blue. Clouds (white) are seen at top left over the Atlantic Ocean, and over the Irish Sea at lower right. Snow and ice (white) are seen on the mountains of Scotland (upper right) and of Wales (lower right) on the western coast of mainland UK. Ireland is mostly free of ice due to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. Rugged mountains and cliffs (brown) line the western coast of Ireland, while lakes and peat bogs dot the interior. Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland, is the large lake in the island's north. Photographed on 4 January 2003 by the MODIS sensor on NASA's Terra satellite.
