Description
Insect spiracle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a spiracle (hole, centre) on the body of an insect. Spiracles are openings in an insect's exoskeleton that connect to the tracheal tubes which deliver oxygen directly to tissues within the insect's body. Spiracles are also opened and closed to regulate water loss. Magnification: x1600 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
