Infrared images of the Orion nebula (M42) taken at four different wavebands in order to show its various features. The top left frame (2.2 microns) shows areas where new stars are forming. The frame below (3.3 microns) shows emission from dust clouds heated by newborn stars. The bright area in the top right frame (2.166 microns) is emission from ionised hydrogen gas heated to 10,000 K by radiation from recently born stars. And in the bottom right frame (2.122 microns) is seen a cold cloud of molecular hydrogen at a few hundred K.
