Infrared image of the planet Saturn at a wave- length of 2.2 microns. The colour code runs from blue for the dimmest infrared regions to red for the brightest. Saturn's famous rings are visible but not its disc. This is thought to be due to methane absorption in Saturn's atmosphere at 2 microns wavelength. The image was taken with the IRCAM infrared camera mounted on the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii. (Compare this image with R390/083, which shows both Saturn's rings & disc visible at the wavelength of 1.65 microns).
