Artist's Description
False-colour infrared image of Saturn taken with the IRCAM camera mounted on the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). It is a composite image of two exposures made at the H (1.65 microns) and K (2.2 microns) infrared bands. An exposure in the K band would not show the disc of Saturn (red), which is seen here thanks to the radiation emitted in the H band. This is probably caused by the presence of methane in the atmosphere of Saturn which absorbs the radiation in the K band. UKIRT is situated on the top of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
