Description
Indian Ocean. 17th-century map of the Indian Ocean and the new lands ('Archipelago dela India Orientalis') being discovered by European explorers in what is now South-East Asia, the Malay Archipelago, and Australia. Places shown include Madagascar, India, Siam (Thailand), Cambodia, the Philippines, Borneo, Java, New Guinea, and parts of northern Australia. The unknown southern continent is referred to as 'Terra Incognita Austral'. This map is from 'Taboas geraes de toda a navegacao' (1630), an atlas produced by Portuguese cartographer Joao Teixeira Albernaz I (active 1602-1648). Albernaz was the most prolific Portuguese cartographer of the seventeenth century.
