Artist's Description

Imperial Ottoman seal, 17th-century artwork. This is the seal of the Grand Turk (Grand Seigneur, Gran Signore), the Sultan of Turkey and ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, ruled from Constantinople in Turkey, reached its height in the 16th and 17th centuries, extending into south-eastern Europe, western Asia, and parts of northern and eastern Africa. Artwork from 'Purchas his Piligrimes' (1625), the magnum opus of English cleric Samuel Purchas (c.1577-1626). This work, also known as 'Hakluytus Posthumus', was a collection of travel tales seen as a continuation of 'Principal Navigations by Richard Hakluyt.
