Description
Hydrogen balloon. Historical artwork of the first manned ascent by hydrogen-filled balloon. It took off from the Jardins des Tuileries, Paris, France, on 1 December 1783, watched by a crowd of around 800,000. Aboard was its inventor, the French physicist Jacques Alexandre Cesar Charles (1746-1823), and M. N. Robert. The balloon design was to change little over the next century as it already included a safety valve for releasing gas, and disposable sand bags for ballast. These devices gave some control over rates of ascent and descent. The first manned flight by hot air balloon had taken place 10 days earlier.
