Artist's Description
Hutton's unconformity at Jedburgh. Artwork of rock strata forming a structure known as an unconformity, observed in 1787 at Jedburgh, Scotland, by the Scottish geologist James Hutton (1726-1797). An unconformity is a discontinuity in the geological record. Here, vertical strata (bottom) fail to conform with younger, overlying horizontal strata (centre). Recognising this type of structure was an important step in understanding the history of the Earth. This 1787 artwork by John Clerk of Eldin was published in Hutton's 'Theory of the Earth'. This was first published in 1785, but was added to in subsequent editions.
