Hurricane Ivan. Cloud-to-ground lightning in the eye wall of Hurricane Ivan. The eye wall is the region immediately outside of the hurricane's central eye. It is an area of dense cloud, heavy rainfall and the strongest winds. This photograph was taken at Loxely, Alabama, USA, 32 kilometres from Gulf Shores, Alabama, where Ivan hit land in the early hours of 16 September 2004. At the time it hit, it was classified as a category 4 hurricane, with winds of 210 kilometres per hour. The winds killed 25 people, destroyed buildings, brought down power lines and spawned tornadoes. Ivan continued inland, weakening to a tropical depression in north-east Alabama.
