Artist's Description

Fossil human jaw. Fossil objects, often dating back millions of years, are formed as rocks slowly form around objects buried in mud. This is the Badegoule jaw, from a Stone Age human (Homo sapiens). The Stone Age started around 2 million years ago as humans first used stone tools. Modern humans (Homo sapiens) did not evolve until about 200,000 years ago. The structure of the jaw, and the teeth, can give clues as to what early humans ate. Fossil from the Natural History Museum of Lyon, France.
