Description
Hubble Space Telescope deployment. Hubble Space Telescope being deployed over the Earth by the space shuttle Discovery on 25th April 1990, during mission STS-031. The HST is being held in position by the remote manipulator system (RMS), seen at lower right. One set of solar panels (brown) has been unrolled. A similar set will be unrolled on the far side of the HST, together providing power for the orbiting telescope. The HST is designed to study the evolution and development of the universe. Unhindered by light skies and a turbulent atmosphere, it can obtain high- resolution images of objects 50 times fainter than can be seen by comparable telescopes on Earth.
