Harry Hoxsey, a former coal miner with no medical training, made a fortune selling ineffective ('quack') cancer cures. The Hoxsey products were banned by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1960. Hoxsey's tonic consisted of elixir of lactated pepsin and potassium iodide.
