Artist's Description
Hiroshima after atom bomb. Image 2 of 2. Aerial photograph of the Japanese port of Hiroshima on 11th August 1945, during World War II, five days after it had been destroyed by a US atomic bomb. The central blast area (upper right) was around three kilometres across. This was the first atomic bomb used in warfare, the second being used over Nagasaki three days later. Over 220,000 people died in the attacks, and thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later. For Hiroshima before the bombing, see image T162/126.
