Description
Hindenburg airship, May 1936. This German zeppelin (a type of rigid airship) famously caught fire and was destroyed in an accident on 6 May 1937 while trying to moor at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, New Jersey, USA. Construction of the Hindenburg began in 1931, and it first flew in March 1936. It had a capacity for 50 to 70 passengers, and also had a crew of 40 to 60 people. The total length was 245 metres. This photograph was taken at Lakehurst on 20 May 1936, a year before the disaster. Nazi swastika symbols are seen on the tail fins. This photograph is part of the Dallin Aerial Surveys collection.
