Artist's Description
Highly enriched uranium train and guards. This 2010 shipment by the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) removed more than 450 kilograms of Russian-origin highly enriched uranium (HEU) spent fuel from Poland. The material was transported by rail to a Polish seaport and then to Russia. The nuclear material was transported in five shipments over twelve months. The shipments were carried out by NNSA's Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI), Poland's Radioactive Waste Management Plant and Institute of Atomic Energy, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Russian Federation. Photographed in September 2010.
