Description
High-tech aerospace adhesives. Demonstration of a tool being developed by NASA for grappling 'non-cooperative' objects, which incorporates high-tech adhesives based on the structure of a gecko's foot. Gecko feet contain around 14,000 hair-like setae per square millimetre. Each setae is tipped with between 100 and 1000 spatulae. These structures bond with surfaces at the molecular level using Van Der Waals' forces producing a very strong adhesive effect. Here, the adhesive is reusable and able to be turned on and off as needed. Photographed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, USA.
