Description
Hertha Marks Ayrton (1854-1923), British engineer and mathematician. Ayrton, born Phoebe Sarah Marks, studied mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge, and then physics and electrical engineering at Finsbury Technical College, London. In 1885 she married her former teacher, physicist William Edward Ayrton. She was the first female to be elected to the Institution of Electrical Engineers (Lady Day, 25 March 1899) and in 1904 was the first woman to read her own paper before the Royal Society.
